Micro Organism Types

Micro-organisms are organisms which share the property of being sub-microscopic. They existed long before man and we have had to adapt to live in an environment where they are far more abundant. Many micro-organisms do not normally cause disease in man, existing in a state of either COMMENSALISM, where there is little or no benefit or harm to man, or in MUTUALISM, where there is some benefit gained by both partners. Micro Organism Types. This non-harmful balance exists when the immune system works well, but these same organisms can cause infection when the latter fails. This changed property is shared by many other micro-organisms which can cause infectious disease in the immunocompetent individual, so-called PATHOGENS. Micro Organism Types.
These pathogens fall into five main groups:

Viruses
Bacteria
Fungi
Protozoa
Helminths

In addition, by convention there are two further classes of small agents which are often included in the study of Microbiology (although not covered in this Micro Organism Types website).

Ticks and mites
Mesozoa and leeches

other lists & sub-divisions

Other scientists will list the following as microorganisms :
Bacteria (eubacteria & archaea), algae, fungi, protozoa, viruses, prions, lichens, slime moulds

Living creatures are divided into two key groups: the prokaryotes, where the DNA in their cells is not enclosed in a membrane-bound nucleus and the eukaryotes where the cells do have their DNA enclosed in a nucleus and often contain other membrane-bound organelles as well. Micro Organism Types. The eukaryotes include fungi, protozoa, algae, plants and all multicellular animals. Prokaryotes include bacteria and the mysterious archaebacteria which are prokaryotic in general structure but also share some characteristics with eukaryotes. Viruses are akaryotic because they are non-cellular. Prions are not micro-organisms but they are studied by microbiologists.
